Meet Catherine: Eco-Friendly Online English Teacher

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in regional Victoria, Australia about an hour away from Melbourne. My hometown is called Lara.

When did you first know you were a traveler?

In 2011 when I was 19. I took a study trip with my university to central Australia. It was my first solo travel experience and only the second time I had ever been on a plane. My eyes were opened to so many cultural sights, a new understanding and perspective of different ways of life, and I felt so alive being in a new part of the world.

What do you do for work?

Online English teacher and Freelance writer.

Teaching location: Marrakech, Morocco 🇲🇦 The terrace lifestyle is the best here and I love these rooftop views! My husband manages hostels in this city so he set up a teaching office space in the building for me. Thankfully, the guests don't seem to mind when they walk past my door and I'm loudly saying "A for Apple"!Teaching location: Marrakech, Morocco 🇲🇦 The terrace lifestyle is the best here and I love these rooftop views! Tell me a little about where you've gone so far. What are your favorite locations and most impactful trips?

I've traveled to 33 countries. I've lived and worked in France, Croatia, Ireland, South Korea, and Morocco. I met my husband when traveling through Morocco. Now we live together in Marrakech

What do you love about Marrakech?

In Marrakech, I love that there is so much diversity and a blend of so many cultures. Every day feels like an adventure. People watching is the most genuine and fascinating thing. I also love the stark difference between the old and new town - it feels like you're being transported through time and culture in just a 30 minute walk.

Word inspo 🌠 These painted signs are actually for my husband's hostel in Marrakech, where hopefully they brighten up the day of many backpackers🙏 🗺️ Anyway, I wanted to share them here as an example of recycled art - these leftover bits of wood were destined for the trash before I grabbed them. Some see rubbish, I see a canvas. It's always worth thinking creatively to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

What are your favorite items that you always travel with?

Definitely my computer. And always a book (hard copy only)

Tell me about your packing style:

The smallest amount possible in the smallest bag possible, & a super organizer.

Have you always been working as an English teacher and freelance writer or did you have other jobs before?

I studied teaching and spent some time in a classroom in Australia. I decided I wanted to travel so I started working as an English teacher. I have been working as both an English teacher and freelance writer since 2014. I have taken on different teaching contracts in parts of the world, and worked as a writer when the contracts finished. Before doing this work, I worked with children on school holiday programs and in disability services in Australia while I was studying.

My husband and I are plan to stay in Marrakech for a few years. He is Moroccan. We are going to Australia for the summer holidays to see my friends and family. It will be his first time in Australia so we are excited for the adventures and traveling around the coast.
